12-13 April 2025
The first DHC weekend trip of 2025 was to Torridon over the weekend 12/13 April. 8 members went along; Ken, Gary, Bill, Steve, Ruth, Sandy, Bob & Jane. Accommodation was in the excellent YH at Loch Torridon.
The high pressure that had persisted over Scotland for the previous 2 weeks held on throughout the weekend. Conditions were thus dry, mild & with the tops clear, although at times there was a noticeable wind chill on the summits / ridges.
On Friday, Bill climbed the Corbett Little Wyvis via an excellent track all the way to the top.
Ken & Gary tackled the Corbett Fuar Tholl via a good stalkers path from Achnashellach. A stiff pull up steep grass, stones and scree led to the col left of the very impressive Mainreachean Buttress. It was then a short climb to the summit.
Sandy climbed the Graham Beinn a'Chlachain, which overlooks Applecross Bay, and enjoyed great views over to Skye.

On Saturday, Ken, Gary & Bill set off from the shores of Loch Kishorn and had an exhilarating airy scramble up A' Choich on the way to the Corbett Beinn Bhan. A long high level traverse was then made towards the Bealach na Ba, where a second car had been left earlier in the day. Ken soloed the Corbett Sgurr a' Chaorachan before joining Gary & Bill at the Bealach na Ba view point. During the walk an eagle was spotted as well as a pair of Ptarmigan and a mouse.
Sandy, Ruth & Steve climbed the Graham Sgurr a Gharaidh that sits above Loch Carron. The approach was quite long and took in Glas Bheum and its decaying trig point. The views down Loch Carron were excellent,

Bob had a solo adventure on the Corbett Beinn Dearg starting from the Ling Hut car park in Glen Torridon and traversing the hill from east to west. An excellent stakers path led to the foot of Carn na Feola. A short steep ascent lead to the summit and then onto the fine ridge which had some good scrambling opportunities before the top of Beinn Dearg was reached. The views of the surrounding Munros, Beinn Alligin, Liatach and Beinn Eighe were fantastic. The descent was steep and rough and lead to the glen and the Diabeg road. Jane meanwhile walked from Loch Carron to Torridon via the Bealach na Ban to the car at the Ling Hut. She then picked up Bob from the Diabeg road.

On Saturday night we all had a lovely meal at the Shieldaig Bar & Coastal Kitchen, which was a short drive from the YH.

On Sunday Ken & Gary retraced Bill's step on Little Wyvis and encountered some very friendly deer within an enclosure through which the path went. The higher hills to the west had a slight dusting of snow, and oil rigs were visible in the Cromarty Firth to the east.

Sandy, Ruth & Steve also had a relatively easy walk from the Torridon Hotel up the Graham Beinn na h-Eaglise, The views towards Liatach were excellent and an eagle was spotted soaring on the thermals.
Bob perhaps had the easiest climb of all on the Sunday with a solo ascent of the Corbett Sgurr a Chaorachan from the Bealach na Ba car park / view point at over 600m! There had been a sprinkling of snow on the summit and great views.
Throughout the weekend a WhatsApp Group was used to let everyone know where they were during their climbs, which is thought to have worked quite well.
Overall an excellent weekend; great weather for April, fantastic views, eagles spotted and many walks / objectives achieved.
Ken
